Why Did This Happen?

Disputes may be created for a number of different reasons. The best way to understand your dispute situation is to contact the student/registrant/cardholder for more information.

Reasons that we have heard include:

  • Not recognizing the descriptor on their credit card statement

  • Forgetting what they charged

  • Charging to someone else’s card (legitimately) and forgetting to inform them

  • Expected a refund and didn’t receive it

  • Expected a full refund and only received a partial refund

  • Unsatisfied with the class/event

  • Fraud (extremely rare)

It is also possible that the bank itself generated the dispute (without the knowledge of the cardholder) or influenced the creation of the dispute:

  • Fraud department flagged charge and was unable to contact cardholder to confirm

  • Bank provided incorrect information about where the charge came from to the cardholder

Most disputes are either related to a misunderstanding about the charge or are related to refunds.
