Why Did This Happen?
Disputes may be created for a number of different reasons. The best way to understand your dispute situation is to contact the student/registrant/cardholder for more information.
Reasons that we have heard include:
Not recognizing the descriptor on their credit card statement
Forgetting what they charged
Charging to someone else’s card (legitimately) and forgetting to inform them
Expected a refund and didn’t receive it
Expected a full refund and only received a partial refund
Unsatisfied with the class/event
Fraud (extremely rare)
It is also possible that the bank itself generated the dispute (without the knowledge of the cardholder) or influenced the creation of the dispute:
Fraud department flagged charge and was unable to contact cardholder to confirm
Bank provided incorrect information about where the charge came from to the cardholder
Most disputes are either related to a misunderstanding about the charge or are related to refunds.
